Happy Little Vegemites

Today (26 January) is Australia Day.

People will be out celebrating in the sunshine, having picnics in parks and getting together with friends, on the beach, by the Harbour, celebrating our national day.

Most of them probably had Vegemite on toast for breakfast. Because Aussie kids are Happy Little Vegemites (from the original 50 year old advertisement) and grew up eating it.

Pretty much everyone I’ve ever met who wasn’t born in Australia hates the stuff. It’s super salty and should be spread very thinly on a base of bread, toast or crackers with a layer of butter between the Vegemite and base. Just enough Vegemite is a very good thing. Too much Vegemite is a very bad thing.

In my humble opinion!

My very own happy little Vegemite, enjoying the much less salty version recently added to the market for kids. Vegemite toast soldiers and mango for breakfast – it doesn’t get much more Aussie than that!

  1. Two thumbs up on the mango. Vegemite – not so much…..

  2. Bassa's Blog says:

Tall person used to eat Marmite toast soldiers when he was a boy – I think it’s the same as Vegemite. He then graduated to Bovril (a beef extract) and ate that almost every day until he came to live in Georgia. He can’t get it in Georgia and misses it very much.

  3. LOL… tried it once… liked it not so much… LOL

I hope you had a lovely day celebrating?! Is it anything like marmite?
