I’ve written before about scent and it’s power over me. Last night after I’d put my Love Bug to bed (after snuggling in and breathing in her beautiful soft skin smell), I was spending some quality time playing with Bella and Beary. Housework schmousework!
Beary was all up for some rumbling, chasings and tug of war with one of their poor unfortunate loveys. When he was done, he was ready for lap dog cuddles. I’m not sure he sees all 34kgs (75lb) of dog when he looks in the mirror, he seems to think he’s a teacup chihuahua who will be able to curl up easily in my lap.
Not that I mind one little bit!
As I snuggled in to his big furry head, I breathed him in. He smells soft. He looks big and strong, but he has such a soft personality and so to me he smells all marshmallowy and lovely. Even the pads of his paws still smell soft, although maybe that’s because his paws are so furry?
When it was Bella’s turn for a cuddle, I marvelled at how her paws have smelt the same to me since she was a puppy. To me they smell like a mixture of earth and sunshine, and breathing that scent in as deeply as I possibly can, makes my heart happy.
This prompted me to update my Facebook/Twitter status: is it just me, or is the smell of dog paws one of the best scents on the planet? #puppylove #dogsaretops
A plethora of responses came back, all agreeing although some stipulating the paws must be clean – I’m not that fussy!
Some of my favourites: they always smell like a warm ironing board; they smell like worn leather; they smell like happiness and comfort; puppy sleeps with comforting paw on my cheek every night; and I’m not sure how to explain this one but a certain Rascal’s paws are known in our house as corn chips, I love the smell of his paws. Pawsome!
Given that the great majority of you have fur family, I’m wondering: what do their paws smell like to you?
(Speaking of friends 4-legged: a huge thank you to Rumpy – our prize voucher arrived last night; and please vote for the lovely Sage in the Dirty Dogs Competition!)

Ha! I snuggle and breathe in the scents of Cupcake a lot. I’m here to tell you they’re not all sunshine and rainbows. I think her feet smell like peanuts and her breath smells like she’s on a steady diet of sauerkraut and dead possums. It’s a good thing she’s cute….
I laughed at Genevieve’s description of cupcakes paws and breath because I was kind of thinking the same thing, the big brown dogs don’t always smell the greatest but I can always count on a good feeling and smell when I nuzzle my face into the tops of their heads and necks 🙂
Ok, I just had to go smell Sage’s paws. EWWWW…they smelled like dirty dog (hehe, thanks for the mention). But then, when I gave her a kiss on the head, she smelled like fresh air! Sorta like Misty Shore’s observation.
Not sure our dog’s paws would smell that great, in fact I am pretty sure they would not. lol
