Saved by social media?

When I started blogging about my decision to become a mumma on my own, and my journey through motherhood, the one thing I promised myself was that it would be an honest account.

No holds barred. Warts and all.

My post earlier this week elicited a lot of reaction. Responses by way of comments on my blog, emails, phone calls and text messages came flooding in. More people than I imagined care about me, Bubba, Bella & Beary. That’s a comfort.

Some of these people I’ve never met in person, but feel we are connected because we follow each other’s lives closely through our blogs.

It’s so incredibly easy to feel like you’re alone in this world. This got me to wondering: how many mothers who feel sad and alone (some of whom have post-natal depression, and others who – like me – are just having a bumpy time) have been ‘saved’ by social media and blogging?

My lovely mother’s group, who I’ve spoken about before, has a closed group on Facebook. It’s our every day extension of the safe haven that is our mother’s group. A place where we can communicate at any hour of the day or night about anything that’s on our minds. Even if it’s the middle of the night, there’s generally someone else awake and ready with a response!

No matter what time it is, there is support somewhere. There are parenting websites, forums, online chat rooms, Facebook groups … and friends on the other side of the world who are awake when you are supposed to be sleeping.

I wonder if there are fewer cases of post-natal depression because it is now so much easier to connect with people when you need them most?

I certainly hope so.

We all definitely need support networks. No one is meant to go it alone, and social media is especially great for parents who can’t always get with a friend because of their family responsibilities.

Glad you found your support. You are not alone whether in the virtual world or in person. ❤ DogDaz

Tall person remembers when it was just phone and letter 🙂 Was that better than a lot of today’s instant communication and instant interruption?
