I’m too tired to be the grown up today

I’m too tired to be the grown up today. And I’m not even joking.

My poor Love Bug coughed all night again. I am happy for anyone who has had a toddler who has had a night cough to leave any tips, remedies, old wives tales,  for me to try in the comments below.

I slept in very small increments and then a noise startled me. It was my alarm.

How on earth did that happen? Seriously. How did it all of a sudden become time for me to get up and face the world and be a professional, corporate grown up?

Who has to string more than one sentence together. And it has to make sense.

And it’s only Tuesday?

45 minutes later – after I’d stumbled out of bed, dropped my phone, showered, dropped my toothbrush, dressed, done my hair, dropped my hair straightener (are you seeing a pattern of exhausted clumsiness here?), fed the dogs and got Bubba’s lunch ready for daycare – I got Bubba out of bed. She had no interest in her bottle and looked as tired as I feel.

I hoped dressing her in her super cute new skirt today (another aunty purchase – this time one while I was actually pregnant!) might brighten her day. Once she was dressed I took a photo to send to her aunty. Standing at the top of the stairs waiting for me, she burst into tears just as I took the photo.

Then she fell down the stairs.

Mumma reflexes are amazing sometimes – I caught her just as her head hit the floor at the bottom, and given her lack of bump or bruise I think I may have just softened the blow. Then we both sat on the stairs and cried for a minute.

Being clumsy when she’s tired seems to be a trait she inherited from her mumma. Poor Love Bug.

It’s going to be a long day.

I’m not really asleep at my desk, but I could be!

  1. Oh my word I hope things change for the better real soon with the coughing and not sleeping. Sorry I can’t be of more help 😦

    1. Just knowing we have friends around the world thinking about us helps a lot!

  2. Not sleeping is soooo hard. For all of you. I sure hope tonight is better. Would a humidifier help?

    1. I’m actually online now to find one to rent – then if it does help, I’ll buy one. I have a vapouriser, but humidifier is definitely the next step!

I think some chemists may rent them? So I guess the chamomile tea is a no go? Or does anyone know? Not the tea bags that you buy but the loose leaf that you get at asian or health food stores, works amazingly for humans…..

      2. Chamomile is good for their digestion as babies – I used to seep it in expressed breast milk. We’ll go to the naturopath next week, but I’ve got a couple of remedies to try tonight. Paws crossed!

So could you give it to her to help her sleep then? Just a small amount? I had shocking insomnia years ago and it really works!

      4. I need to fix the cough – that’s what’s keeping her up. I am armed with a few of remedies to try tonight, paws crossed one or a combination of them works!

  3. It really is a super-cute skirt…. Are you using a humidifier in her room? Has she had a chest X-ray? Been checked/vaccinated for whopping cough? My only home remedy is organic chicken soup made with the bones of the chicken as well as the meat (something about the marrow of the bones fortifying the broth) and fresh thyme (to kill germs). I’m pretty sure this isn’t an option for you, though (vegan? vegetarian?) so I’ve got nothin’, except to continue sending prayers and happy thoughts.

    1. Yes, yes and yes. No to the chicken soup (vegetarian!), but yes to the thyme (one of my favourite herbs so I’ll put some more in her vegetable soup). We’ll take all the care you want to send us. Big kiss for Cupcake! x

Poor darling! Well, both of you. My mate Nikki swears by this remedy. Chop an onion in half and leave it in her room. Worth a try x

    1. Oh Mrs Woog, bless you and your one Haviana – I’m up for anything, so onion shopping on the way home it is. At least then I can blame the tears on the chopping of the onion. x

Oh no! Poor Bubba! We feel the same exact way on some days. However, usually wearing a nice scarf helps brighten our mood.

    Bella and DiDi

    1. That’s why I put a lovely bright skirt on both of us today Bella & DiDi 🙂

Oh god i hope things look up for you and tomorrow be abetter day for the both of you. I know how you feel though!

    1. Thank you. I’m counting the hours until what I hope is bedtime for a good 10 hours tonight. Only about 4 to go. I’m going to bed the minute Bubba does!

You need to find a desk you like and curl up underneath it!!!! I would recommend a nice large cushion for Bubba! In fact reading your post has made me feel all yawny so I may take my own advice! Sweet dreams!

I hope last night went better. When my bubba had a persistent night cough, my dr suggested elevating her mattress with a pillow under the head, dabbing ‘eucalyptus and menthol drops’ on her cot sheets, bars of her cot etc, and putting a wet towel over a drying rack in her room. He also diagnosed a secondary chest infection and put her on antibiotics. Not sure which of those worked but something did… and we had blissful sleep again. Good luck 🙂 xx

    1. I can’t elevate her mattress because she’s such a wriggler she just ends up head down at the other end of the mattress! Last night I swapped to lactose free milk, gave her a homeopathic cough mixture (Ivy root), a eucalyptus rub on her chest then a heat pack over the top of her pj’s for 10 mins immediately after, used the vapouriser and sliced a raw onion in half and put it in a bowl in her room (a few people recommended variations of the onion). Despite being a little smelly, she slept for 11 hours and didn’t cough until she woke up at 6:30am! I’ll be trying all of those tonight again. Oh, and I’m off today to buy an immune booster to add to her vitamins. Of course, one of my dogs was up a couple of times last night with an upset tummy, so I didn’t sleep right through – but we’re headed in the right direction! xx

I’m so sorry you still are not getting any sleep. The only home remedy i know was suggested by doctors and grandparents. Dry cough honey and if not a dry cough honey and lemon. The lemon tends to dry up mucus or any phlegm. A really old doctor told me to give my daughter a hot toddy when she was 18 mths. but I felt that was too young for alcohol. I hope something works soon!!

    1. I’m fairly sure my daddy gave me a hot toddy – or maybe just dipped my dummy in rum and honey. Probably best we don’t try that though! She did sleep last night though – thanks to a combination of lotions/potions & old wives tales!

  10. Have you tried marjoram essential oil in the vapourizer? It has antiseptic properties and might help clear up whatever is making poor Bubba cough so much. I use it in the shower when I’m sick by just throwing a few drops in the bottom of the tub and letting it waft in the steam. It also smells lovely and clean.

    1. I will definitely get some today and try it. Thank you! x

Ooh, I hope you solve this cough thing soon. I assume you get her into a steamy bathroom (just run a hot shower for a bit) whenever you need to, that’s my only trick. It sounds like you had a better night the other night.

I know this was a year ago but have her checked for asthma. My second son had a persistent cough & every cold & virus under the sun. Once he was diagnosed with asthma & on meds to build up his lungs he was so much better. Poor Mum-it’s not easy is it?
