Crazy hot

No, not me. I mean, I’m cute and all, but I wouldn’t have said crazy hot. Okay okay, I know. Stop laughing.

Now that we have that out of the way, I’m talking about the heatwave experienced in Sydney yesterday. It got to 42 degrees (107.6 F) at our house in the afternoon. And was still 37 at midnight. Not very conducive to sleeping. Or anything else for that matter.

Everyone stayed inside. We don’t have air conditioning, so we had fans, cool towels, sprays of water from a mister, ice cream (the dogs gave me that look and ended up with most of mine!), and improvised our own water play by laying loads of towels down on our living room floor and filling a storage tub with water and toys. Which we then played in. And the dogs drank from. And Bubba went bottom first into! But it kept us cool for a little while.

Having seen me feed Bella some water in my hand, Bubba kept putting her hands in the water then holding her fingers in front of Bella and Beary’s faces.

Occasionally one of them licked her hands.

Then Beary decided her feet were much tastier. Of course this lick was followed by much giggling from my ticklish Love Bug.

Bella was very happy to be close to the action and positioned herself in front of the spray when Bubba and I splashed with our toes.

You know it’s hot when this happens: our Bureau of Meteorology was forced to adjust the scale used to represent forecast temperatures. They now have colours representing 50-52 and 52-54 celsius. Crazy hot!

Sadly, not all people or animals fared as well as us yesterday. There were over 100 bushfires in our state, and this morning, even though the temperature is about 20 degrees cooler, over 30 of those fires are still burning out of control. Hopefully that number will reduce significantly today and any loss will be limited. Not that I think any of them are reading blogs today, but I’d like to offer up a huge thank you to the amazing firies (including the volunteers) who put themselves in danger to keep the rest of us safe.

I hate to end on a down note, but I can’t let this go without mention. In our neighbourhood at close to midnight (keep in mind it was still 37 degrees) there was a dog howling. It was obviously distressed by the heat and if I could have figured out whose yard it was in, I would have been knocking on their door. It made me furious. Bella and Beary were also distressed by it. Heat like that isn’t good for anyone. Pets need to be inside and kept as cool as possible.

When will people learn to be responsible to and for their 4-legged family?

So you don’t have to finish reading this post feeling glum, I’d suggest you read the opening paragraph again. Just for laughs.

  1. That’s pretty crazy hot! I love Bella and Beary in the middle of all the action.

  2. To keep the puppies cool, you can put a t-shirt in the freezer and then put it on them (tying it up at the bottom so they don’t trip). Bubba would find it hilarious I’m sure and for Beary, with his thick coat, it would really cool him down. Never leave the puppies in the t-shirt and go out though, as it can then heat up and start to overheat them!

Our house was filled with frozen kongs, lots of water (and spraying down with the hose) and constant fan on! It seemed to do the trick. xx

    1. I love the t-shirt idea, thanks 🙂 x

Dang – that’s hot. I used to live in the Miami, Florida area and had no AC. That only lasted 2 years though before I said ” AC or move to some place cooler.”

I used to put a tray of ice cubes in the doggy water to not only cool the water down, but they loved playing with the ice cubes.

Stay cool. (had 8 inches of snow at my house yesterday; does that help?)

    1. Can you send us some snow? 🙂

Wow we sorry that’s way too hot. We had that summer weather before but we have air conditioning. The Newfs can’t take that heat actually that is too much for everyone. The water was a great idea and fun hope it cool way down for you.xxx

    1. It’s much cooler today but going to get hot again on the weekend – just in time for Bubba’s 2nd birthday party! We’re celebrating in the morning so hopefully it won’t warm up until later in the day. Beary (Malamute x Golden) seemed to really feel the heat because of his double coat. Poor love. xox
