8 years of lessons from my puppy

8 years ago today I posed the question are you my puppy? and a scrawny little scrap of fur and ears leapt into my arms. And my heart.

are you my puppy

She has taught me many things that I’ve shared with you over the past couple of years, but a few things really stuck out to me this week as I thought about the anniversary of Bella’s gotcha day.

When you see someone you love, let them know how happy you are about it. Whether they’ve been to buy milk, or they’ve been at work all day, or they’ve been away from you for more days than you can count. As you run to them, make a slight detour to pick up your favourite toy to drop at their feet, just to reassure them that you love them more than they could possibly imagine. So much that you’ll share your favourite toy with them.

If you want some love and someone’s laying down, stacks on cuddle them. Not sure how to do that? Stand above them and drop the weight of your body onto theirs. Then nuzzle in even closer.

When you’re happy, and I mean really happy, your nose should shake. Even if the person you’re with can’t see your tail {because maybe you’ve just poked your head around the corner}, they should be able to guess you’re level of happiness – because your tail is wagging so hard your snout is shaking.

It’s okay to lean on someone if you need to. I know of a couple of older Shepherds who were big leaners. As Bella gets older, she’s really perfecting the art of the lean.

If you live with someone who works from home, and you think it’s time for playing or pats instead of work, just lay across their keyboard. They’ll get the message pretty quickly.

If someone loves you, and I mean really loves you, they won’t mind if you hog their bed, so you may as well stretch out diagonally!

I can’t thank Bella enough for the unconditional, incredible love she’s given me. The scrawny little rescue mutt with the big chocolate eyes and the happiest tail I know. The puppy who stole my heart … and made me confident life is at its waggiest best with a fuzzy soul mate by your side.

Happy 8th gotcha day my precious fuzzy love!

    Happy Gotcha Day, Bella!
I had to smile about her tail wagging so hard that her nose shakes. I like to lean into people when they’re making a fuss of me.

    1. That would be a nice big warm lean 🙂
